"Most Fulani in the DC area settle in Silver Spring and Hyattsville in Maryland, both directly connected to Washington DC by the Metro. The DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) has one of the most active and organized West African Muslim communities on the entire East Coast. Interestingly, one of the earliest known Muslim residents in DC history was Yarrow Mamout, a Fulani Muslim who lived as a free man and property owner in Washington in the 1800s. Our people have been part of this city for centuries."
